Hunter Safety and Education
While we all like to have fun hunting upland game birds, safe gun handling and field activities are critical. Through classes and education sessions, we teach the proper ways to hold, maneuver and care for shotguns, getting those who are not familiar with a shotgun comfortable and confident in handling their firearm so that they can enjoy their hunts safely and successfully. New hunters are also instructed in safe and proper behaviors in the field. Classes are scheduled every summer to prepare you for the fall/winter season.
Our chapter is focused on the PF Path to the Uplands initiative. In the metro area, we have developed a collegiate outreach program in it’s second year now. In the first year, we targeted Colorado State University and Front Range Community College and their respective Wildlife Biology Departments. Our outreach includes establishing relationships with department heads and faculty, meeting with various student groups to discuss conservation and the role Pheasants Forever plays, arranging for PF Biologists and PF Conservationists to deliver classes on relevant conservation subjects, involving students in PF Annual Virtual Job Fair and inviting 30 students at a time to participate in our Habitat and Wingshooting Adventures. The Adventures include gun safety, how to hunt with and without dogs, PF conservation programs and hands on shooting instruction on our clays range.
With hunter numbers dropping 5% per year, our initiative serves 3 critical goals. First, we introduce students who mostly have had zero experience with hunting, shooting or conservation practices to a whole new world. Second , students who become hunters and good stewards of the land will surely pass these things along to their children. Third, even students who do not become hunters will be better informed voters.
Colorado State University students have even started an on campus PF Chapter of their own as a direct result of this collegiate outreach.
